Update: I-84 East Reopens in Waterbury After Serious Motorcycle Crash Causes Hours-Long Closure

WATERBURY, Conn. — A section of Interstate 84 eastbound in Waterbury has reopened after being shut down Sunday morning due to a serious motorcycle crash, according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation and State Police.

The closure impacted eastbound traffic near Exit 23 and extended between Exits 22 and 23 following the crash, which was reported around 10 a.m. Officials described the incident as a serious injury collision, prompting an immediate emergency response and temporary shutdown of the highway to allow first responders and investigators to access the scene safely.

Connecticut State Police confirmed later in the afternoon that the affected stretch of roadway had reopened to traffic after several hours of investigation and cleanup. However, authorities warned that drivers should still expect delays in the area due to significant traffic backups that formed during the closure.

Motorists reported long delays and congestion stretching back for miles as traffic was diverted off the interstate. Emergency crews remained on scene for an extended period while assessing the crash, documenting evidence, and working to restore normal traffic flow.

At this time, officials have not released additional details regarding the motorcyclist involved, including their identity or current medical condition. The cause of the crash also remains under investigation, and authorities have not indicated whether any additional vehicles were involved.

Transportation officials advised drivers traveling through the area to continue exercising caution, as residual congestion and slower traffic conditions may persist even after the reopening of the highway.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about motorcycle safety on high-speed roadways, particularly in areas with heavy commuter traffic and frequent lane merging.

Authorities are expected to release further updates as the investigation continues and more information becomes available regarding the circumstances that led to the crash.
