The cycling and transportation community is mourning the tragic death of Riley O’Neil, 35, a Chicago Department of Transportation planner and longtime advocate for safer streets, who was killed Friday afternoon in a crash in the Bridgeport neighborhood.
According to Chicago police, O’Neil was riding southbound in a painted bike lane in the 3200 block of South Halsted Street shortly before 5 p.m. when he was struck by a car door opened by a driver exiting a white BMW. The impact allegedly threw him into the roadway, where he was then struck by an oncoming semi-truck also traveling southbound.
Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, where bystanders and a nearby physician attempted life-saving measures, including CPR, until paramedics took O’Neil to Stroger Hospital. He was later pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner ruled his death an accident resulting from injuries sustained in a bicycle and semi-truck collision.
Police issued citations to the driver involved, including charges related to illegally opening a vehicle door, driving on a suspended license, driving without insurance, and illegal parking. The driver has not been publicly identified as the investigation continues.
O’Neil worked for the city’s Complete Streets program at CDOT, where he focused on redesigning infrastructure to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. Colleagues and friends remember him as a passionate advocate for cycling safety and a dedicated public servant committed to reducing traffic deaths in Chicago.
Before joining CDOT, O’Neil worked in transportation consulting and contributed to projects including the installation of more than 1,000 bike racks across the city. He was also known for organizing public bike initiatives and improving access to cycling infrastructure.
Educators and peers from DePaul University’s sustainable urban development program, where O’Neil studied, recalled his enthusiasm for biking and his deep commitment to urban mobility. He was widely respected for his energy, kindness, and determination to make Chicago’s streets safer.
His death has prompted renewed calls from cycling advocates for protected bike lanes along high-risk corridors such as Halsted Street. Community members and advocacy groups have organized a memorial ride in his honor.
